FEM Simulation and Experimental Tests on the SMAW Welding of a Dissimilar T-Joint

Residual stresses induced by the welding processes may, in some cases, result significant warping and distortions that can endanger integrity of welded structures. This document reports an investigation process to make a dissimilar T-joint through advanced Finite Element (FE) modelling dedicated laboratory test. The consisted two plates materials, AISI304 S275JR steels, both having thickness 5 mm, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). Thermocouples were used acquire temperature variations during welding. In parallel, FE model was built simulated “element birth death” technique. Numerical experimental outcomes compared terms distributions distortion at end final cooling, showing able provide high level accuracy.
